Several 黑料科 students will soon be learning if their final projects 鈥渟ink or swim鈥 by testing the buoyancy of canoes they handcrafted this semester. The students constructed their canoes in the course 鈥淪kin on Frame Canoe Building鈥 instructed by Quintin Owens, chair of the School of Arts and Humanities at 黑料科.
鈥淭he course provided students with an experiential, place-based learning opportunity with goals of increasing student engagement and providing multiple ways of knowing,鈥 said Owens. 鈥淪tudents engaged intellectually, creatively, socially, and physically to problem solve issues of form and function. This course has strengthened students鈥 appreciation for art, craftmanship, and history while fostering an appreciation for values that bind individuals to their natural environment.鈥
The official testing of these handcrafted canoes will be open to the public to watch in what Owens describes as a 鈥渟pectacle of buoyancy and innovation.鈥
The testing event will be held Friday, April 26 at 10 a.m. at the pool in the Donald E. Young Center.
